Tirtha Kanya maiden in holy water
During ancient India there is a Hindu religious practice in which girls were "married" and dedicated to a deity. In addition to taking care of the temple, and performing rituals they learned and practiced Bharatanatyam and other classical Indian arts traditions, and enjoyed a high social status.
Their daily routine is to take bath early in the morning and should present themselves at the temple during morning worship. These paintings depict those girls enjoying their bath in holy water.
